Get paid
Get Paid
Invoicing, reminders, rates and records. Everything for turning finished work into money in your account, starting with the free options.
Doing the work is half the job. The other half is making sure it turns into money, on time, without damaging the client relationship. For a business of one, that comes down to four things.
- A rate that covers your real costs, including time nobody pays for.
- Clear terms before work starts, so nobody is surprised about payment.
- Invoices that go out promptly, and a simple way for clients to pay.
- A calm, consistent way to follow up when payment is late.
None of that requires software to begin with. A spreadsheet, a calendar and a few email templates cover it for many people. When you outgrow them, the guides below will help you choose.

When you are ready for software
Invoicing and accounting tools tend to fall into two families: invoicing-led tools that make it easy to bill and get paid, and fuller accounting tools that also handle bookkeeping and bank reconciliation. Which suits you depends on your volume, your tax situation and whether an accountant is involved.
The software we describe includes FreshBooks (opens in a new tab), Bonsai (opens in a new tab), Zoho Books (opens in a new tab) and Xero (opens in a new tab). We have not hands-on tested them, and we do not rank them. Read the side-by-side comparison, or see the full breakdown with limits and free alternatives.
